Testing & targeting - an interview of Omniture's Nicolas Mériel

A while ago I had a chance to swim in the snow with Omniture's Nicolas Meriél. And for sure, we talked little bit about web analytics and especially testing & targeting.

What is testing?

Splitting your traffic (for example A/B versions) and showing each part a different experience or content on one or more pages, in emails or display ads. Back to content

How to do testing and how to start?

It typically starts with a hypothesis! Analyse and diagnose your web analytics data and try to formulate a data-driven hypothesis. For example: would more content for new visitors increase my conversion or will showing different content based on gender segmentation make more sense?

Once you have a hypothesis you will need to run a test to prove it to be right or wrong. This is where your online business optimisation starts. Back to content

What choises there are for testing?

You can run A/B..N tests, Multivariate Tests, testing ads i.e. banners as well as emails, landing pages and even run tests for mobile devices. However, the real power of testing lies in combining your test results with targeting. Once you have found a winning version you want to make sure that you serve i.e. target this to specific segments (for example new/returning or male/female visitors etc.) which will make your visitor’s experience much more relevant and increase your conversions. Why companies should test?

Because “one size does not fit all” and different people like different things. This is true offline and as well online. There is a lot of evidence that shows that relevant content provides a richer user experience and allows to increase conversions. If you know that your customers are into Lordi, you probably would not play Katri Helena to them. Then again who knows, so make sure you test it, as any kind of test is better than guessing. ;-) Back to content

What is your best testing case ever?

This depends and can not really be generalised. We have many great testing case studies (many available free at Omniture.com). On some tests we’ve seen conversion lifts of over 1000%! Back to content

Why do you like testing?

First of all, it puts fun into your work! Beyond that it allows to eliminate tedious (often ego-driven) discussions about design, colours, beliefs, tastes etc. and allows to let your visitor decide! Ultimately and if done well, it can achieve what marketing is really about: providing the right product/content, at the right moment, to the right person at the right price. Back to content

What kind of tools there are for testing?

Obviously there is Omniture Test&Target. Besides that, there are different solutions from other vendors such as for example Interwoven Optimost, Maxymiser as well as Google’s Website Optimizer. Back to content

What is the hardest part in testing?

Having good ideas and developing dramatic different designs! Is there something you should definitely avoid? Avoid trying to squeeze in all into 1 test. Testing is a process. Apply a crawl-walk-run strategy. Multivariate Tests have become pretty en vogue as people believe this is the “coolest”. However, quite often a well designed A/B..N test with sophisticated segmentation and smart behavioural targeting might be the better approach as well as providing faster results.

Google Analytics Individual Qualification

Three weeks ago Google announced Individual Qualification program of the Google Analytics. Although I have been using GA for several years, I spent couple of hours with Google's conversion university to learn details, few tricks and to remind some old stuff. The test was quite easy for me and I passed it with 85 % of right answers. Still,
"Google Analytics Individual Qualification is a good prove of certain level of expertise required to get benefits from the web analytics application."
There is 90 minutes time limit to answer 70 multiple choise questions online. I spent around 75 minutes. You have to have 75 % right to pass the test, which cost is $50. From end customer or employer point of view,
"You can and you should require Google Analytics Individual Qualification sertification before you hire a consultant."
If the case is you're working with Google Analytics in general. In many, many, many cases that I'm involved in,
"The real problem is the lack of insights and actions based on web analytics or other web intelligence data."

TV Advertising and Web Analytics study

It took a while to finish my TV advertising and web analytics observation study. That's why I'm not 100 % sure how reliable this research is. Still, it gives pretty clear picture how TV ads have been used.
"TV advertising is mostly used for attention and building brands."
However, in some cases it is also used for a certain intention. We have had some kind of debate during the last WAW with Steve Jackson and good discussion about this with Tomi and Perttu too. Especially during the economical downturn,
"I think TV advertising should be used for creating direct actions."
I was curious about how TV advertising was converting people to Internet so basicly I sat down and watched some commercials. Mainly from two biggest TV channels in Finland, MTV3 and Nelonen. Here are the results of the Finnish jury:

Total number of TV ads analysed: 115
Clear call-to-action in a TV ad: 29,6 %
URL appearing during the TV ad: 60,0 %
Unique URL with those ads which
included the URL: 8,7 %
"Unique domain names are the only way to measure exact effects on website visitors of TV ads."
Web analytics tracking code with those TV ads which included the URL: 68,1 %
"Three companies out of ten TV advertisers don't have a javascript based web analytics system in place."
Web analytics vendors had the following shares from TV advertisers analysed:

Google Analytics
: 57,5 %
Snoobi: 19,2 %
Omniture SiteCatalyst: 8,5 %
Other web analytics system: 14,9 %

It also seems that MTV3 has more domain names and unique URLs in TV ads compared to average. Just a coincident? What do you think about this post, let me hear your thoughts?
